| Tiny hamlets, picturesque villages and thriving market towns... |
The town of Chagford where you can find our butcher, the Big Red Sofa, a cheese shop and the two most amazing hardware shops in the world! |
Dartmoor towns and villages seem to have an air about them that makes them unique; not quite timelessness but an ability to hold off the chaos of the outside world without being backward or left behind. Our favourite town is Chagford, only 20 minutes away, where you can find the two most amazing hardware shops in the world, boutiques, a butcher, delicatesen and even a cheese shop among others. Tavistock and Moretonhampstead, only 25 minutes away but in opposite directions and Asburton to the south are also worth visiting for their history and shopping. Widecombe-in-the-Moor, immortalised by the song about Old Uncle Tom Cobley an' all, 6 miles away, has it's famous fair each September.

Discovering Dartmoor
As you travel around Dartmoor, you will stumble upon tiny hamlets, clusters of maybe only a few houses, and villages with just one church and one pub (well, how many do you need really?), all worth stopping in, if only for a little while.

Eating out on Dartmoor
Although we hope that our guests will dine with us at some time during their stay, we also know what a pleasure it can be to try different places. There are many traditional inns and some gastro-pubs in and between the villages and towns, cafes and restaurants too. For a full list follow the link above but here's 3 to consider. |
The Huntsman's Bar in the East Dart Hotel, "the pub" in Postbridge,is now under new ownership. John and Mary offer good, sound homecooked pub food and a choice of St. Austell real ales
The Warren House Inn, 2 miles away and reputed to be the 3rd highest pub in England has a fire that has been burning constantly for over 160 years. They serve food all day most of the year but it's worth checking in the winter though. |
Possibly our favourite for consistently really good food. More like restaurant quality than pub but with the village pub atmosphere. About 30 minutes worthwhile drive from Beechwood. |
| Be aware that during the winter some places close on Sunday nights and Mondays, and last order times can change too. Check before counting on them being open! |
